Dearly Beloved of God,

Easter is almost here.  Sunday, April 8th fast approaches.

We started on our journey to this special Sunday back on Ash Wednesday.
Solemnly ashes were placed on each of our foreheads as a reminder to us of our mortality and the consequences of sin. “You are dust and to dust you shall return”

Remember playing as a little tyke “Ring Around the Rosy”?. Joining your hands with other and going around in a circle, singing: “Ring around the rosy, pocket full of posy, ashes, ashes, we all fall down? and then falling to the ground.

This song has a history .It began to be sung about 1347 and derives from the not-so-delightful Black Plague, which killed over twenty-five million people in the fourteenth century. The "ring around a rosie" refers to the round, red rash that is a symptom of the disease. The practice of carrying flowers and placing them around the infected person for protection is described in the phrase, "a pocket full of posies." "Ashes" is an imitation of the sneezing sounds made by the infected person when first infected. Finally, "we all fall down" describes the ensuing death resulting from the disease.

But ”ashes” mark not our true end, nor our final destiny. Because Jesus was crucified for our sins, because Jesus was raised up from the grave, death has been defeated. Yes, “ ashes, ashes, we all fall down” but we do not stay down.

We are the people of the moved stone!
We are the people of the empty tomb!
We are the people of the vacant grave!

We are the people of the Living Christ!

Because of the reality of our Lord’s Resurrection: “Easter, Easter, we’re all raised up!”

Alleluia!
