Apopka Vineland Road Orlando, Florida 32819 (407) 876-4000 Phone Line (407) 876-1084 Fax Line Preface: Dearly Beloved, Grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ. Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding. We, the people and pastor of Salem Lutheran Church, are delighted to be able to celebrate this significant occasion with you and to serve you in Christ. It is good that you have chosen to be married in the church with the benefits of Gods presence and blessings. It is Christs desire and hope that his joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (St. John 15::9-12) We want your wedding to be an occasion overflowing with joy for you, your families and your guests. This pamphlet is designed to assist you in preparing and having such a wedding service. Your wedding is first and primarily AN ACT OF WORSHIP. As a Christian couple, you will be joined together as husband and wife. Within the sacredness of this moment, it is befitting that we give thanks to God for the joy he has brought into your lives through each other and ask his blessing and benediction as you enter into your new covenantal relationship of life-long faithfulness. Therefore, it is important that all that we do during this time be appropriate for the wedding of God. As you are discovering, there is more to preparing to be married than you had anticipated. There are so many arrangements to be made, plans to be set and appointments to be kept. May the following prove informative and beneficial to you. In Joy, In Jesus, Pastor Wayne F. Schmidt & The Worship Committee of Salem Lutheran Church Foreword The information provided in this pamphlet has been developed under the auspices of the Worship Committee of Salem Lutheran Church. The information is general in nature. It deals with questions most frequently asked in preparation for a wedding. If further information is desired, please contact the Church Office at (407) 876-4000. Our Church Secretary will direct your inquiry to the appropriate staff person. Before You Schedule a Wedding Be an active participant in the life of this congregation. While membership in Salem Lutheran Church is not a requirement for marriage in this church, it is certainly important that you have both an understanding and an acceptance of marriage as the Church teaches it. Therefore, if you are not a member, before you proceed to schedule your wedding, it is advisable that you attend worship at Salem Lutheran Church for a time in order to ascertain if it is, indeed, the community of faith in which you would be ministered to spirituallyboth for your wedding and in your future married life. If the style of worship and spirituality expressed is appealing to you, please state your desire to the pastor to schedule an initial meeting with him to discuss the possibilities. Be willing to attend an initial Introductory Session, a Wedding Planning Session and two Pre-Marital Counseling Sessions with the pastor. Be acquainted with all the information included in this pamphlet. Placing Your Wedding on the Parish Calendar Schedule your wedding date at least four months in advance. To assure the date you want, earlier notification is advised. Contact the Church Office at (407) 876-4000 to inquire as to the availability of your desired date. All wedding dates are confirmed upon the conclusion of the initial Introductory Session with Pastor. Weddings are not conducted during the seasons of Advent and Lent due to the demands of the seasons and the extensive preparation for the High Festivals of Christmas and Easter. The hour of your wedding will be set in coordination with your reception plans and in conjunction with the Parish Calendar. No weddings are held after 6:00 p.m. Pre-Marital Counseling The Churchs ministry to you is greater than performing a wedding; it is preparing you for marriage. Along with the initial Introductory Session and the Wedding Planning Session with the pastor, you are required to participate in two-Pre-Marital Counseling Sessions. These sessions are based on Gods vision for marriage the two shall become one, no longer two but one. They are designed to take what is a good relationship already and enable it to become even better. As prospective bride and groom, you are both to participate in: Introductory Session (1) Wedding Planning Session (1) Pre-Marital Counseling (2) These sessions are to be scheduled in coordination with the Pastor. Attendance is mandatory. There is no fee involved. The Wedding Service The wedding service is contained in the Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW), pages 202-205. This order of service provides the theological framework for a warm and touching experience of worship for you and your guests as we gather in Gods presence. To this basic order of service may be added such desired features as: The Lighting of the Unity Candle; partaking of the Holy Eucharist by all; the giving of roses to the mothers, etc. All options and preferences are done in consultation with pastor during the Wedding Planning Session and may be permitted as long as they are consistent with the Churchs understanding of Christian marriage. Officiants for Ceremony The service shall be solely under the direction of the pastor of Salem Lutheran Church. Other ordained clergy may officiate or assist in the wedding ceremony at the invitation of Salems pastor. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is ecumenically oriented. Please share your desires pertaining to this matter during your Wedding Planning Session with pastor. Place of Wedding The Christian marriage ceremony if a service of worship and is normally conducted in the churchs sanctuary. Length of Service The length of the service is about 30 to 35 minutes. The inclusion of musical solos, the addition of desired features and/or the number of attendants impact the length of the service. No wedding service should exceed 55 minutes. Rehearsals For most weddings, the rehearsal is held the night prior to the actual wedding. The time involved is about one hour. It is asked that you be prompt and all attendants and participants be present for the rehearsal. Even if you are planning a small wedding with just a few guests, it is best to have a rehearsal. The time for your rehearsal is to be coordinated with the pastor. Your marriage license should be brought at this time (or sooner if available) and given to pastor. Wedding Music Music is an important part of any wedding celebration. In thinking about selections for your wedding, please keep in mind that your wedding service is a worship service. All music, as well as all action, during this sacred time should be worthy of God. Criteria for Selection of Music There are two criteria informative for selecting music for your wedding. First, be certain that the text (especially in the case of vocal solos) express the gospel of Jesus Christ; and second, choose music that provides an offering worthy of presenting to our Lord. Current or popular songs are seldom suitable for church weddings. Usually such music extols the virtues and characteristics of romantic love without reference to the love of God. Our Minister of Music is available to assist you in selecting the music for your wedding. Initial contact can be made through the Church Office. Prelude Prior to the beginning of the bridal processional, there is 20-30 minutes of organ music played as your guests arrive. This music is customarily selected by the church organistunless the bridal couple have specific requests to make. If so, contact the Minister of Music in advance informing her/him of your desire. Processional and Recessional Music While traditionally used in some weddings, the Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride) and the Wedding March by Wagner are not deemed appropriate for a Lutheran Church wedding. There are a number of appropriate selections that have a much more sacred meaning and significance. A musical piece customarily used in our church for the processional is Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clark. Complementary to this selection is the recessional, Trumpet in D by Henry Purcell. Our Minister of Music will be more than happy to acquaint you with these musical pieces and introduce you to a variety of musical possibilities by other composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Cesar Franck, Ludwig van Beethoven, George Fredrich Handel. Soloists-Instrumentalists Soloists or instrumentalists may be used. When considering music for either a vocal soloist or an instrumentalist, remember the criteria for selection of music. The text and tune of the music should be appropriate as an offering to God. Much contemporary music is secular in nature and is not appropriate. Such music you may want to include for your wedding reception. If vocalists or instrumentalists are desired, there are a variety of places before and within the liturgy of the wedding service where they can enhance the occasion. Their placement depends on the nature of the musical offering and the corresponding activity being enacted in the service. Pastor will assist you in examining possibilities of placement. If desired, vocalists or instrumentalists may be of your own choosing or the Minister of Music may be able to assist you through the musical resources available within the congregation. When organ accompaniment is needed for any soloist or instrumentalist, sheet music is to be supplied for the organist by the bridal couple. Please do this after conferring with the Minister of Music. Organist It is expected that our Minister of Music will function as organist for all weddings held in our sanctuary. Sanctuary Decorations Flowers You may use the florist of your choice for your flowers and/or special decorations. In making your floral plans remember: moderation is compatible with the architectural style of the sanctuary and chancel space of Salem Lutheran Church. Please ask your florist to complete their preparations in the sanctuary and chancel area one hour before the service. Arrangements for access into the church facility can be made through the sexton. It is appropriate that floral arrangements be placed in the chancel behind or beside the altar. No flowers or decorations are to be placed on the altar itself. Florists are to provide containers for all floral arrangements used. If desired, special decorations may be used to adorn the pews. There are nine full pews on each side of the nave, two short pews on the left side as you face the altar, three short pews on the right. Well insulated wire or high quality masking tape may be used to fasten decorations. Chancel Furnishings of the Church Flower stands are available for your use. They are custom made and match the design and integrity of the altar and all other chancel furnishings. Available to you is a brass candelabra designed specifically for the lighting of the Wedding (Unity) Candle. If you desire to include this option in your wedding ceremony, you are to obtain two non-drip regular size ten inch in length white candles and the Wedding Candle itself. Also, available to you are eight festival pew torches that are fastened to the pews with a brass bracket. These torches are custom made to match the other furnishings in the sanctuary. We also have two wooden kneelers available to you that are compatible to the chancel furnishings. They will be positioned before the altar, either side by side or face to faceaccording to the preference of the bride and groom. These chancel furnishings, along with the communion rail may be decorated. Again moderation is suggested. Wedding Photography and Videos In order not to distract from the sacredness of your wedding ceremony, no flash photographs are to be taken during the marriage ceremony. Photographs by your professional photographer may be taken: As the bridal party enters and leaves the church during the processional and recessional. In the Sanctuary following the ceremony. The Pastor will be more than happy to pose for pictures with you and to recreate any part of the ceremony for you. During the ceremony, non-flash photographs may be taken from the choir loft, located in the rear of the Sanctuary. Video taping is permitted but the cameras must remain stationary with no moving in the Sanctuary during the marriage ceremony. All taping is to be done from the choir loft, located in the rear of the Sanctuary. Please instruct your photographer to speak with the Pastor before the ceremony begins, so that parish customs regarding photography in the Church may be reviewed. Please advise your family members and friends of our rules regarding this matter. Reception and Rehearsal Dinners The Parish Hall of Salem Lutheran Church and kitchen facility are available for hosting receptions or rehearsal dinners. For these events the bridal couple is responsible for the physical set-up, decoration, re-set, and clean-up of the space. The sexton is to be contacted to arrange for the opening and closing of the facility and procedures for the use of the kitchen and custodial equipment. If alcoholic beverages are used during the reception or rehearsal dinner, they are to be used in moderation. The use of alcoholic beverages is not permitted in any part of the church complex other than the Parish Hall and at no other time during wedding activities. Salem Lutheran Church maintains a smoke-free facility. To reserve the Parish Hall contact the Church Office well in advance of the anticipated event so that scheduling may be coordinated. Considerations Wedding Bulletins Wedding bulletins may be used. Please inform the pastor of your desire so that he may provide for you an outline of the Order of Service used for weddings. It is your responsibility to procure and purchase the bulletins. A variety of local Christian Book Stores carry them in stock. The church secretary will print your bulletins for you. The church secretary should receive the wedding bulletins at least two weeks in advance of the wedding with all pertinent information attached, i.e. a list of attendants, participants, etc. Dressing Facilities Our large Nursery serves well for the bride and her attendants. Members of the grooms party may use the Conference Room, next to the Pastors Study. Both have available restrooms and full length mirrors. Time of arrival The suggested and recommended time for the bridal party is one hour before the wedding service. Pastoral Presence Pastor, along with his family, does enjoy celebrating the blessed occasion of your wedding. If you desire Pastor (and members of his family) to attend your rehearsal dinner or reception, please extend a specific invitation to him in advance. Wedding Coordinator It may be of some advantage to you to employ a professional Wedding Coordinator for the celebration of your reception and related activities. As for the church wedding service itself, the use of a wedding coordinator is not deemed necessary or desirable. Pastor will function in this capacity during this segment of your celebration. Custodial Services For the wedding service and rehearsal, the sexton is responsible for opening, preparing, setting up, cleaning, resetting and closing the facility. Custodial Services through the sexton is required. A fee will be charged for this. No rice, no confetti, no bird seed is to be thrown as the bride and groom leave the premises. Soap bubbles are suggested as an alternative. Financial Considerations Salem Lutheran Church does not sell marriages, and it does not rent facility space for marriage events. However, there are financial obligations to be assumed by any couple desiring a wedding.
